Generally served in bright, soft pastels, ice cream isn’t exactly something that you’d associate with a jet-black ingredient like coconut ash. But, of course, you’d be wrong, because coconut ash ice cream is totally a thing, and it’s coming to Dallas.
Chills 360, the brand new Thai-style rolled ice cream purveyor in Deep Ellum, will soon introduce a coconut ash ice cream that will appeal to everyone’s inner goth. The treat’s key ingredient, a type of activated charcoal, reportedly doesn’t add much flavor, but is an arguably healthy ingredient touted for its detoxification properties. More importantly, though, it offers the ability to terrify small children with (temporarily) stained black teeth.
Coconut ash ice cream isn’t exactly a Chills 360 invention, but the chain does bill their version as the first in Dallas. Last summer, coconut ash ice creams popped up at NYC’s Morganstern’s, inspiring a minor viral frenzy. Considering that rolled ice cream is already an Instagram no-brainer, don’t be surprised if that happens in Dallas.
Chills 360 will introduce its new black ice cream on May 6 with a launch party, complete with live music, a red carpet, and giveaways. The flavor will only be available for a limited time, sadly, but perhaps a frenzy could inspire the shop to keep it around.
