The neighborhoodification of the Design District continues: Ascension Coffee will descend on the spot next door to gastropub the Meddlesome Moth in early December. Owner Russell Hayward (the restaurateur behind departed West Village spots Lazare and Tom Tom Noodle Bar) says Ascension will be a muffin-free zone and will instead feature inexpensive, "chef-driven food" like paninis and salads. Come 5 p.m., the coffee shop will turn into a wine bar with bites like crostinis and cheese plates. Ascension will source its beans from Richardson-based roaster Coffee Eiland.
Another indie coffee shop by the name of Origin Natural Food will also make its debut this winter on McKinney Avenue near the Katy Trail, with a focus on healthy takeout meals and coffee from Oak Cliff Roasters.
