For many moons (since July, to be exact) hungry Uptowners have waited for signs of life to appear at the new Pop Diner going in next to Max's Wine Dive in the West Village; nary a Twitter account nor a Facebook page has popped up for the new twenty-four hour spot. Central Track managed to get an inside look at the space, and reports it should open in mid-January.
The arrival of a twenty-four hour eatery will certainly have an effect on the nightlife patterns of the trendy shopping and dining district; everything else in the area closes by 2 at the latest, with most kitchens shutting down earlier. The diner is decked out in full-on retro-mod style, with black and white booths and bright portraits depicting everything from a Warhol-style Marilyn Monroe to Michael Jackson and the Ghostbusters logo, plus a huge projection screen and a full bar.
The owners hail from Detroit but say they'll be doing "Coney Island diner fare"; presumably, this means diners can expect items like chili-topped hot dogs (like those served downtown at Motor City Coney Island), gyros, and Greek salads along with the usual diner suspects like burgers and breakfast.
