When Tully Phillips reached out with info that her Tu-Lu's Gluten-Free Bakery was expanding from New York to Dallas, we couldn't help but wonder, "When you're successful in New York, why Dallas?" But as luck would have it, Phillips is an SMU alum and had recently moved here with her husband. It only made sense to bring the sweetness to Big D.
Tu-Lu's (formerly known as Tully's in NYC) doesn't just offer gluten-free treats, it's 100% gluten-free, with vegan and dairy-free offerings as well. After attending Le Cordon Bleu in Austin and interning at Gramercy Tavern, Phillips received a diagnosis of gluten intolerant. It was then that she began experimenting with recipes what would impart the flavor of traditional baked goods, just not the allergic reactions. And Tu-Lu's was born. Her cookies, brownies, cupcakes, and even granola satisfy the sweet teeth of celiacs and gluten-intolerants all over NYC, and now here.
Tu-Lu's celebrated its first tug of the open sign at 6055 Sherry Lane today, but photographer Sara Kerens visited yesterday, to snap shots of the bakery before the bustle -- and just to catch Phillips elbows deep in dough. She was preparing treats to fill the then-empty bakery case -- today's reports find said treats flying out of the case and into mouths. Tu-Lu's Gluten-Free Bakery is open 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
