Celebrate August With These National Food Days

New, 2 comments

Our social media feeds have been blowing up this morning with more "National Days" than we've seen in awhile. Truth is, virtually every day is one "National Food Day" or another, and common knowledge dictates that these "official" moments of fabricated significance affect relatively few of us on a daily basis. But since so many Dallas restaurants and businesses are celebrating one or more today—even with a drink special or two—we've compiled a list with suggestions on how to get your fix locally.

According to local sources, as well as The Nibble, there is a bevy of ways to celebrate food throughout August:

August 2
National IPA Day - Union Bear has 7 IPAs on tap, and Deep Ellum Brewing Company is "tapping a cask of IPA with Grapefruit and dry-hopped with Summit & Glacier" during their Thursday night brewery tour, and also handing out Buzzbrews coupons for the after party where "Buzzbrews Deep Ellum is tapping the last known keg of Dreamcrusher." The Common Table is tapping four IPAs today, and Meddlesome Moth's Rare Beer Tapping is a Brooklyn Blast, and for lunch, they're pairing Muai Big Swell IPA with the chef's calamari special.

National Ice Cream Sandwich Day - Unrelated (or is it?) to National Sandwich Month, this will be one of your easiest finds in almost any neighborhood. CoolHaus is literally "a truck full of ice cream sandwiches" - some of which contain a boozey kick -- and the rolling resto will be parked today in the Arts District from 11:30 to 2:00, until moving on to Addison from 3:00 to 5:00 and finally back to the Sigel's on North Fitzhugh until 6:00 to 9:00. Pokey-O's is another solid standby in the Park Cities.

August 3
International Dallas Blonde Day - Deep Ellum Brewing Company tells us this is a real thing, and we'll just have to take their word for it. Actually, it is a clever ploy to entice DEBC fans to the Katy Trail Ice House from 6:00 until 10:00 for the launch of the hometown brewery's newest creation, a "5.2%
citrusy balanced session ale." We're told that these killer glasses come free with a purchase, but just for one night only. Full event details here.

The Month of August
National Brownies at Brunch Month - Bread Winners Cafe in Uptown boasts one of McKinney Avenue's most popular weekend brunches, but that's not all they do. With a rotating bakery menu boasting more than 14 brownies alone - you read that correctly - it's easy to be bad, even before lunch.

National Catfish Month - Aw Shucks and Big Shucks are all over this one. DFW.com reports that the two will offer Blackened Catfish for $9.99 all month and are holding a photo contest. The best, most interesting or most creative fish photo will receive a $100 gift certificate.

National Sandwich Month - No guesswork in this one. City of Ate compiled a slideshow of "10 Awesome Sandwiches in Dallas" with selections like Jimmy's Roast Pork Sandwich and The Doc Brown at Pecan Lodge. Have one every day.
