Gerhard's, a family-run German restaurant, opened its doors on West Hickory Street a couple weeks ago (lederhosen included). Owned by Gerhard Pelzer and Valrie Rosen, the eatery originated in Roanoke but decided Denton was a better fit for their "old-time hofbräuhaus" concept. (Menu items such as bratwurst cheese fries will certainly appeal to the college kid crowd.)
"Denton has been extremely welcoming," says Rosen, nothing that Gerhard's is the first authentic German food establishment the city has seen.
The restaurant offers a plethora of German beers on tap, serves an all-you-can-eat Sunday brunch and maintains a beer stein wall where loyal beer guzzlers reserve rights to particular steins via self-autographed name tags. "We had one loyal customer from Roanoke come in here and already complain that his name had been swapped to a different beer stein on the wall. Someone had moved them around," Rosen said.
Gerhard's is planning its own mini-Oktoberfest for the weekend of October 5.
