Old school diner legend The Mecca will open the doors to its new Lakewood location (5815 Live Oak) at 4 p.m. today. The 74 year old Dallas institution was formerly located on a somewhat seedy stretch of Harry Hines, where it had done business since the sixties.
The Mecca's new friendlier location in the old Molly Maguire's (and before that, Tipperary Inn) space will enable it to stay open for dinner—a feat that would have been dubious at best in its previous neighborhood. Known for classic diner breakfasts and cinnamon rolls literally the size of a human head, The Mecca will no doubt give Lakewood breakfast favorite The Gold Rush Cafe (located just a stone's throw away on Skillman) some competition for its daytime crowds.
