It's the end of an era, at least in terms of caffeination options for folks in the Henderson Avenue area. The Pearl Cup has been serving up free wi-fi, tasty Pearl Lattes and plenty of workspace for the laptop-toting sect since it opened its doors in 2007, and today is the OG location's last day of business — as reported earlier this month, the beloved indie coffee shop is shutting down, citing rent that's no longer reasonable.
It's not all bad news, though: The space will remain a shrine to caffeine, as the new tenant will be Austin export Houndstooth Coffee. Houndstooth has been scouting Dallas locations for some time and originally planned to open in Lakewood, but that didn't pan out; the projected opening date is sometime in the spring.
Pearl Cup owners Carlene Saelg and Rita Davis say they plan to open a replacement for the Henderson shop, but have yet to settle on a location. In the meantime, there are three other Pearl Cups that remain open: One in the Arts District by Winspear Opera House; a mini-cafe on the bottom floor of St. Paul Place downtown; and the most recent addition, a Richardson location in the II Creeks shopping center. The Henderson location will shutter for good at 7:30 p.m. today.
