The Alcove, a cozy little wine bar in the equally cozy State Thomas neighborhood, has quietly stepped up its beverage offerings for patrons seeking a different sort of buzz. Last winter they installed a Synesso Hydra espresso machine — the very same ultra-fancy apparatus that's in use at Ascension Coffee in the Design District, and the only other one in the city.
Now, they've also added some serious barista talent — Mike Mettendorf, formerly of Ascension, is now overseeing the coffee bar aspect of The Alcove. The coffee bar will also soon be grinding cult favorite Intelligentsia beans from Chicago (Mettendorf just returned from a coffee pilgrimage to the Windy City). Stop by any day of the week between 7 a.m. — 8 on weekends — and 3 p.m. for a taste of what he's brewing up. (And yes, they have free wi-fi.)
