They say "the early bird gets the donut," or something like that — and that proved very true this morning at the opening of Deep Ellum's brand new doughnut shop, Glazed Donut Works. Stragglers showing up after 8:30 a.m. were greeted by a neon pink "SOLD OUT" sign and a display case that held only crumbs.
After opening at 7 a.m. sharp, the neighborhood's newest breakfast destination sold over 500 donuts in just an hour and a half. Co-owner Darren Cameron said the crew had been at work since midnight, and was in a state of shock and disbelief that they sold out so quickly. They're naturally going to ramp up production as much as possible, but Cameron says the doughnuts are quite labor-intensive, particularly the yeast-raised varieties he's so fond of; unlike many other doughnut shops, Glazed makes just about everything, including all their glazes, from scratch.
Stop by Glazed tomorrow starting at 8:30 a.m. for another chance to snag a pink box of doughnuts, or place an order ahead of time to make sure you don't leave empty-handed. Prices range from $1 (regular glazed and chocolate iced) up to $4 for the deluxe donuts with names like Achocolypse Now and Elvis Killer; there's also a daily vegan option (today's was banana-pecan with maple glaze) and coffee, including iced and cold-brew options. Look for late-night hours to begin next week.
