There are definitely plenty of upcoming restaurants to get excited about this year, but that's just the tip of the iceberg — 2014 also has many coffee shops, bars, breweries and sweet shops on the horizon. Here are ten worth anticipating:

COFFEE SHOPS

Houndstooth Coffee
Location: Henderson Avenue
Description: Many were sad to see neighborhood coffee shop The Pearl Cup close (the owners cited too-high rent), but Austin export Houndstooth will soon open in its place, boasting professionally trained baristas and beans from its own local roastery, plus craft beer and wine.
Projected opening date: Spring

Method: Caffeination & Fare
Location: East Dallas
Description: A much-needed neighborhood coffee shop is slated to go in right next to Joyce & Gigi's at Ross and Hall, and this one just might make itself a destination for coffee nerds: Expect a first-of-its-kind-in-Dallas Slayer espresso machine, plus Chemex, French press, AeroPress, local beans and industry nights.
Projected opening date: Early 2014

BARS & BREWERIES

Bishop Cider Co.
Location: Bishop Arts
Description: DFW's first hard cidery has been a long time coming, thanks to plenty of red tape, but when it finally does debut, the tiny space (just 750 square feet) will also include a tasting room — surely a great addition to Bishop Arts.
Projected opening date: Soon

Black Forest Biergarten
Location: Henderson Avenue
Description: The former owners of Knox Street Pub are bringing a beer garden with German food to the empty space adjacent to Slip Inn, and it sounds like a perfect fit for Henderson. It'll feature a menu of German-influenced bar food including latkes, soft pretzels and local brats, and a selection of German beers plus some German-style ones made closer to home like Franconia Wheat and St. Arnold's Lawnmower.
Projected opening date: Early 2014

BrainDead Brewpub
Location: Deep Ellum
Description: A craft beer power trio has very exciting plans for Main Street. BrainDead will offer 12 beers that are brewed on-site, plus another 30 on tap, in a huge space that will include a bar, dining room and a brew room.
Projected opening date: Spring

Cold Beer Co.
Location: Deep Ellum
Description: The Deep Ellum resurgence continues with this new bar from the owners of Plano's Fillmore Pub. They're taking over a long-vacant spot near the Double Wide and have plans for a big patio, along with a small kitchen to serve up sandwiches made with local ingredients to pair with all the local beers.
Projected opening date: Unknown

Mirth & Refuge
Location: Downtown
Description: Despite the rather questionable moniker, expect good things from Consilient's upcoming "luxurious subterranean drinking establishment" at The Joule. A dynamic craft cocktail menu designed by entrepreneuring bartenders Chad Solomon and Christy Pope (who also did the drinks at neighboring CBD Provisions) will accompany a menu of upscale bar food.
Projected opening date: Originally slated for summer 2013

Small Brewpub
Location: Oak Cliff
Description: DFW clearly has brewpubs on the brain this year; this one is slated for Jefferson Boulevard's new development and will have 12 beer taps, plus "a music venue as well as a restaurant that supports a chef-driven concept."
Projected opening date: Unknown

SWEET SHOPS

Kate Weiser Chocolates
Location: Trinity Groves
Description: 27-year-old chocolate wunderkind Kate Weiser left her post at Oak Lawn's Chocolate Secrets to open her very own shop, thanks to Trinity Groves' incubator program. Expect gorgeous hand-painted bonbons, plus other fun items like bacon toffee and macarons.
Projected opening date: April

Melt Ice Creams
Location: Near Southside (Fort Worth)
Description: Local photographer Kari Crowe is bringing DFW's first "farm-to-cone" ice cream shop to Fort Worth's hip Near Southside 'hood. Expect housemade cones and flavors like sweet potato-maple and lavender made with local, seasonal ingredients, plus sorbets and vegan flavors.
Projected opening date: Spring
