The world's current number one restaurant El Celler de Can Roca of Girona, Spain might just be headed to Dallas. (UPDATE: Per today's announcement, Can Roca is now the world's number two restaurant; Copenhagen's Noma has regained the number one spot.)
No, the three-Michelin star restaurant isn't planning to expand to the Metroplex; the potential visit would be part of their Roca & Roll World Tour 2014, a venture that will turn the highly acclaimed Can Roca into a travelling restaurant complete with 26 staff members.
According to the Wall Street Journal, "this summer they'll hit Mexico City, Lima, Medellin and, if all goes well, New York." Per a tweet by LA Times restaurant critic S. Irene Virbila, chef Joan Roca stated that the tour "may include Dallas/Houston" after the stops in Mexico, Peru and Colombia. (Both parties are currently in London awaiting the announcement of the 2014 World's 50 Best Restaurants list, which should begin at 1:30 p.m. CST.) A followup tweet by Virbila reveals that the possible Texas tour stops would occur in August. UPDATE: Per the Houston Chronicle's food blog, Can de Roca chef Joan Roca will appear in Houston on May 19 to announce the full details of the tour stops. Houston is confirmed to be the first stop on the tour which kicks off in August.
El Celler de Can Roca was opened in 1986 by brothers Joan, Josep and Jordi Roca and specializes in Catalan cuisine with modern twists that have earned it comparisons to the legendary el Bulli. The restaurant knocked iconic Copenhagen restaurant Noma out of the number one World's Best spot last year, a title it had held for three consecutive years.
