Heads up, enchilada plate die-hards: Local Tex-Mex icon Herrera's Cafe will shutter its Maple Avenue location next Monday, the Dallas Morning News reported last night. The restaurant, which has occupied several different buildings on Maple since it opened some four decades ago, was originally slated to move yet again to a new-construction building just up the street — until they discovered that the tax rate at the new building would beperilously high. City of Ate reports that the Herrera's owners are now searching for a new location, possibly on Riverfront Boulevard.
Herrera's has several spin-offs in the DFW area including a Cafe Herrera at Mockingbird Station (and a more recently opened one in Denton), but many locals, including Observer critic Scott Reitz, will attest that the food just isn't the same.
