The State Fair of Texas isn't exactly known for being vegan-friendly, what with all the meats-on-sticks being tossed into deep-fryers; luckily for the city's vegans and vegetarians, the fifth annual Texas Veggie Fair will return to Reverchon Park on October 19. Unlike the State Fair, which is all about unhealthy food, livestock and auto shows and potentially vomit-inducing carnival rides, this yearly event centers around "plant-based cuisine, healthy green living, and animal welfare" and showcases "vegan food and product vendors, a local beer garden, chef demos, kid's activities and speakers from across the country." Like the State Fair's Big Tex Choice Awards, the TVF features a food contest, though the fare is considerably lighter than what's generally found at Fair Park; entrants last year included tofu and potato breakfast tacos and vegan peanut butter cheesecake. This year's sponsors include Earth Day Texas, Whole Foods and Peak & Elm. Admission is free and hey, you can even bring your dog along.
