Another day, another new bar in the Deep Ellum area: Long-awaited Cold Beer Company could open as soon as Friday, according to the Dallas Morning News' Beer Blog. Anyone who's been around the neighborhood a while will remember the small building between Deep Ellum and Expo Park as Vern's Place, a soul food spot with a loyal following for its fried pork chops and other homey dishes; the new owners (who are also behind Plano's popular Fillmore Pub) have left the building largely intact, says Robert Wilonsky, but they've added some new features like garage doors that open onto the patio.
More importantly, though, Cold Beer Company will feature 24 beers on tap (most of them craft and local), half a dozen cocktails and a small menu of sandwiches, hot dogs and apps, including a couple items that pay homage to the building's former tenant. Something else to note: Thanks to the building's freestanding status — a rare find in the area — "there's plenty of parking."
