After 19 years, Exposition Park's Amsterdam Bar took a bow Monday evening as it exited Dallas's bar scene. Owner Mike Scheel abruptly announced the closure in a Monday morning interview with the Dallas Observer.
Scheel tells the Observer his decision coincides with the beginning of a new venture: he plans to start his own cider business. Unfortunately, barkeeps can't hold manufacturing, wholesaler/distributors, or retailers licenses under Texas law, so Scheel had a tough decision to make—the cider or the bar. He hopes to bring his cider to the market by next year. As for the quick closure, Scheel says he wanted to keep the goodbyes short and sweet.
"I could drag this thing out, but there's really no point," he says. The idea of having a "long pity party" for his bar isn't all that appealing in his eyes.
