Praise the Sushi Gods, Uchi Dallas Officially Opens June 1

And not a moment too soon.

At long last, Uchi has an official opening date: The Dallas outpost of Tyson Cole's Austin-born Japanese wonder hits Dallas June 1.

A media tour gave writers and bloggers a peek at the very-nearly-complete space — which was previously a bank — last week; while photography was strictly prohibited, this photo recently posted to Uchi's Facebook gives some insight:

The restaurant is sure to be packed with curious Dallas diners once it opens, but it seems Uchi is making every effort to ensure the wait is a pleasant one: A gravel patio area with misters and landscaping will provide a relaxed setting to wait for a table, complete with free bites to tide you over ("wait food," as an Uchi rep described it) while you sip on a cocktail or two.

As far as the decor goes, expect a dining room unlike any other in Dallas: Lots of wood (specifically walnut and western red cedar) lends a warm but laid-back vibe, joined by brass accents, unique custom-built curved wooden booths, and white accent walls that have been scraped to add texture. It's also the first Uchi location to score some very high-tech lighting fixtures that can be controlled via tablet; fully adjustable color and brightness ensures the food will always look its best (and all the better to Instagram, natch). In addition to the aforementioned booths and banquette tables, other seating options include a white marble-topped sushi bar and a private space in the back that can be rented out for parties and events.

The kitchen team led by chef de cuisine Nilton Borges, Jr. began cooking last Wednesday, with staff training and tastings now in full swing. The open kitchen is home to around 30 kitchen staff in all, including four sous chefs, two junior sous chefs, and multiple sushi chefs. "There's very much a sense of teamwork," Borges said. "Everyone's very dialed in."

Uchi will be open seven days a week starting at 5 p.m.; in the meantime, plot your feast of foie gras nigiri and Wagyu beef on a hot rock by scoping out the menu.

UPDATE: Uchi is now taking reservations via phone at (214) 855-5454 or through OpenTable.
