Over the past few years, Deep Ellum has largely shaken its reputation as a seedy bar district as it transformed into a bonafide dining destination. Now, after months of growth, the neighborhood is facing a string of violent crimes.
WFAA reports that Deep Ellum residents are on high alert after a rash of robberies in the neighborhood. Monkey King Noodle Company employee Hayley Evans is among the victims, telling the station that a duo of two men got her attention, stole her purse, and then physically assaulted her on August 12.
After that incident, two violent muggings — both involving guns — took place in the neighborhood. As a result, the Deep Ellum Foundation is encouraging people to walk together in groups at night, along with the police stepping up foot patrols of the neighborhood on its busiest nights, a.k.a. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
Police have not yet said whether or not the muggings were connected or if they have found any suspects, but are asking people to come forward with any information they may have about these crimes.
