Texas Tech men’s basketball coach Chris Beard is a serious fan of Whataburger, and he isn’t afraid to make his love for Texas’ favorite burger chain known.
While the team was in Dallas for last week’s games against Stephen F. Austin University and the University of Florida, Beard made at least two trips to Whataburger locations in Dallas for his cheeseburger, mustard and pickles only. He also orders a root beer milkshake, a Whataburger tip passed onto the coach from his predecessor and mentor, former Texas Tech coach Bobby Knight, according to a tweet from San Antonio Express-News columnist Mike Finger.
“Have you ever gone to Whataburger at 2 or 3 in the morning? Don’t go through the drive-thru. Go in next time, and just get a corner booth and watch America,” Beard told Finger in an interview. “You’ll see so many cool things at Whataburger. You will see a guy pick up a tab for somebody else. You will see somebody clean up a plate that wasn’t his.”
Beard is headed out of Texas to take on Purdue in the tournament’s Sweet Sixteen, so he won’t be able to cop any mustard-topped Whataburgers until after the Red Raiders return from the tournament.
