Austin institution Terry Black’s Barbecue is en route to Deep Ellum.
The purveyor of smoked meats, which will slide into the former Dallas Comedy House building at 3025 Main Street, is currently hiring barbecue cooks, cashiers, and meat cutters via Craigslist. Terry Black’s, named a Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ joint, counts First Lady Michelle Obama as one of its biggest fans.
Its pitmaster twins Mark and Michael Black opened the inaugural location with their dad, Terry, near downtown Austin in 2014. The meat royalty family also includes Terry’s brother, Kent, who runs Black’s in Lockhart. In Dallas, Terry Black’s will occupy a sprawling 11,000 square foot space that will no doubt house the hordes of fans who come to check out its brisket.
In Austin, the meat-cutting process is part of the show, with sliced brisket, pork, ribs, beef ribs, turkey, and sausage options, alongside sides like cream corn and baked potato salad and desserts. “It’s the beef rib, lusciously fatty, that’ll have you coming back,” writes Texas Monthly, adding “this may well be the most underrated barbecue joint in Austin.”
Eater reached out to the team about timing of the opening on Main Street, which hasn’t come without some real estate drama. Last year Terry’s faced backlash over claims its new location was ousting Dallas Comedy House from its Deep Ellum home; the team bit back and claimed that wasn’t the case. Either way, Dallas Comedy House has since moved to a different locale not too far away.
A representative for Terry Black’s tells Eater that the restaurant currently expects to open sometime around November 18.
