At the end of this month, Peticolas Brewing Company will host a boozy brunch celebration of the life of slain Tejano music queen Selena Quintanilla Perez.
On March 30, the beloved Design District brewery will host its second-annual Selena Brunch, complete with micheladas and “beermosas” made with Peticolas’s Golden Opportunity brew. The brewery has also enlisted a couple of local purveyors — Deep Ellum food truck Easy Slider will serve tiny burgers, Tutta’s Pizza will be firing pies to order — to bring their own versions of Perez’s beloved Whataburgers and Pizza Hut slices.
Peticolas’s Selena-themed brunch is a newcomer to the scene of annual celebrations in tribute to the late singer. In the years following her death, thousands of Perez’s fans gather annually to celebrate her life at events like the annual Selena Party, hosted at Oak Cliff’s Country Burger. That event will return again on March 31, with live music and a Selena look-alike contest.
For folks who are somehow unfamiliar with Perez, the Texas native scored crossover success in both Tejano and pop music with classics like “Amor Prohibido” and “Dreaming of You.” In 1995, Perez was murdered by Yolanda Saldivar, the president of her fan club.
