A new restaurant called Uno Mas aims to bring a creative spin to Tex-Mex on Henderson Avenue by serving up unique dishes like cauliflower fajitas, pineapple and avocado guacamole, and mezcal-braised short rib enchiladas.

Uno Mas opened quietly in March but had to close due to Dallas’s shelter-in-place order. It’s now open again, and serving diners at a socially-distanced, 75 percent capacity. The restaurant is the work of HattenLuke Hospitality group, which also owns neighboring restaurant Smithy and Downtown cocktail bar The Woolworth.

Head chef Ronald Von Hatten is also co-owner of RJ Mexican Cuisine, which features slightly more traditional Tex-Mex cuisine. Those flavors are present on the menu at Uno Mas as well, such as San Antonio-style puffy tacos, citrusy shrimp aguachile, and spicy red posole. The chicken fajitas are marinated in Uno Mas’s house margarita mix, while the steak is steeped in a soy-pineapple marinade. There’s also a cheesy queso fundido burger topped with chorizo and served alongside french fries loaded up nacho-style.

The restaurant’s cocktail menu features flavors from various parts of Mexico and is organized by region — CDMW, Las Playa and Las Montanas. Beverages include the Como La Flor, with sotol, blanco tequila, crème de violette, grapefruit, lime and elderflower foam; an Old Fashioned made with reposado tequila instead of bourbon, and a variation on the margarita made with coconut water.

Uno Mas is now open for dine-in or to go orders.
