Failed attempts to pronounce gas station wonderland and Texas favorite Buc-ee’s are creating a stir on TikTok recently. One woman’s cheerful video about her very first trip to a Buc-ee’s outpost went viral because of the way she repeatedly said the store’s name.
“OK, it’s our family’s first time at Buc-ee’s,” user Crazy Life Of Ash says at the beginning of the video, pronouncing it to rhyme like actor Garey Busey’s last name. She also pans to a ubiquitous parking lot grackle: “Oh look, they have birds that greet you at the door.” Numerous TikTok users have responded to the original video to instruct non-Texans on the store’s proper pronunciation.
The lastest seemingly-innocent viral video comes after a series of memes in which users were pronouncing the store as “bussy’s,” a term that's gained NSFW usage on social media.
The gas station-on-steroids is known for selling everything from t-shirts to beef jerky to kitschy gifts like magnets and statuettes. It’s a frequent pit-stop for road-tripping Texans thanks to its ultra-clean bathrooms. And for the uninitiated, the name is pronounced like “Bucky’s”.
