Want to know what Austinite and controversial podcaster Joe Rogan — an infamous racist, misogynist, transphobe, and Islamophobe who spread misinformation about the use of ivermectin for treating COVID — likes to eat? Well, he’s a big fan of Sushi by Scratch, and chefs Phillip Frankland Lee and Margarita Kallas-Lee are holding a pop-up of the restaurant in Dallas that will be open on December 8 and be around until February 8, 2024. Lee promoted that an omakase service was coming to the Adolphus in downtown Dallas by sharing an Instagram reel with Rogan, whose unfortunate approval is noted all over press releases about the opening, telling fellow undesirable Texas import Elon Musk how great the place is. Lee has also been a guest on Rogan’s show to discuss his food.
The Adolphus’ area managing director, Danny Estevez, explained in a press release that the partnership came about after the hotel noticed that intimate, “speak-easy” style dining experiences have been gaining popularity. Sushi by Scratch in the Adolphus will host 10 people per meal, with seating at 5 p.m., 7:15 p.m., and 9:30 p.m. from Wednesday through Sunday. Seventeen courses will be served. Reservations are apparently available now.
If that’s not your omakase cup of tea for whatever reason...
Sushi | Bar, out of Austin, is now open in the East Quarter (aka downtown but on the Deep Ellum side). This spot offers the same 17-course service with seatings Wednesday through Sunday at 5, 7:15, and 9:30 p.m. with reservations available now. It was started by the Lees, who sold it in 2021, per Eater Austin. As far as we know, Joe Rogan has yet to comment.
The whole east side of Dallas can’t wait
Birdie’s Eastside, from TJ’s Seafood proprietor Jon Alexis, announced it will open the biggest patio on that side of town on December 13. It will start with happy hour and dinner, to expand service to include lunch and a weekend brunch in 2024. The space has been under construction on the busy Mockingbird Lane for months, renovating the former Luby’s into a family-friendly indoor/outdoor bar and grill. And the outdoors is massive, with a 7,000 square foot turfed patio for the kids and an adjoining resort-style indoor and outdoor patio for the grown-ups.
Update: December 7, 2023: 3:08 p.m.: Alexis contacted us to say the Birdie’s patio is actually 7,000 square feet, not 3,500. His addition of the <big eyes emoji> to that was entirely appropriate. A note has also been added to acknowledge the Lee’s previous involvement with Sushi|Bar and to include an update for the Sushi by Scratch pop-up.
