Where to eat after midnight

Eating well in the wee morning hours can be a difficult thing: Most Dallas restaurants shut down their kitchens by midnight if not earlier, and getting your meal from a drive-through window can be a depressing affair.

Next time you find yourself out late and in need of some sustenance, scope out this guide to the can't-miss late-night eats of Dallas; with options ranging from tacos and pizza to Korean and Thai, there's bound to be something that strikes your fancy once the last round of whiskey shots have been downed.

Where to eat and drink outside, even when it's hot

There's no denying that it is absurdly hot in Dallas right now, but that somehow doesn't keep dedicated drinkers off the city's numerous patios. Dallas' patio culture is really like no other city.

Here, getting a drink means enjoying a killer margarita or fancy craft cocktail while sitting underneath misters and enjoying excellent people-watching, catching up with your crew, or (and perhaps most importantly) drinking so many beers that calling an Uber is absolutely required.

Whether in search of a great after-work happy hour or a lazy Sunday in the sun, these 25 excellent patios offer up Dallas' best al fresco dining. Find a spot in the shade, and just keep trying to remember that cooler temperatures are on the way...eventually.

And the food looks killer.

Brace for the arrival of Matt McCallister's Filament: The highly anticipated, more casual sibling to FT33 snagged its certificate of occupancy yesterday at 2626 Main Street, meaning an opening date is likely just around the corner.

While a menu has yet to surface, press materials for Filament have stated that the new Deep Ellum addition intends to "honor simply prepared ingredients of the South." A few photos posted to Facebook give a tasty indication of what, exactly, that might translate to:

Plus, Scott Reitz digs Resident Taqueria.

This week Leslie Brenner trekked to Trinity Groves to file a review on Saint Rocco's, Phil Romano's old-school red-sauce Italian spot. "Most of [the food] is pretty good," she proclaims — then she reaches deep into her critical soul and emerges with these words:

In the course of three visits, nothing I sampled was underseasoned or overseasoned, nor was anything undercooked or overcooked.

Anyway, stick to the classics (veal Milanese, calamari, a "Sicilian" twist on lasagna) and you'll do just fine here. Two stars.

Meanwhile, an L.A.-bound Scott Reitz weighed in on Lake Highlands hot spot Resident Taqueria.

Resident is a taqueria for sure, but don’t come looking for freshly grilled suadero garnished with cilantro and onions or pork freshly shaved from the trompo. ... The recipes aren’t conventional, but the flavors speak honestly and consistently deliver.

Reitz stops short of choosing favorites from the taco menu, but does concede that the guacamole, blasphemously garnished with green peas, is pretty damn good.

In other reviews news this week: D's Eve Hill-Agnus also reviewed Saint Rocco's (spoiler: she has mixed feelings about the food, but digs the old-school atmosphere), and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram found uneven cooking from the new chef at Cafe Modern inside the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.

The Hibiscus chef's new venture is almost ready for its debut.

Those lamenting Graham Dodds' exit from Hibiscus need despair no longer: The farm-to-table obsessed chef will debut his new restaurant in just two weeks' time. Called Wayward Sons, it takes over the former Woodfire Kirby's site on Greenville Avenue, near Blue Fish and across from the Granada Theater.

The restaurant is a partnership between bar and restaurant gurus Brandon Hays and Phil Schanbaum (So & So’s, High Fives, Standard Pour) and Dodds, and a press releases promises it'll be "a progression of chef Dodds' hyper focus on local, seasonal and Texas cuisine." That translates to dishes like sardines on toast, purple potato tostones with cabrito, a clever riff on the classic Waldorf salad with celery root and roasted grapes. Beef hails from 44 Farms (the Texas ranch that also supplies restaurants like Knife), and more unusual proteins include lamb brisket with duck chicharrones.

Work on the interior is still underway, and no photos have been revealed just yet — but the press release describes "a warm, inviting environment brimming with plant life and a mix of raw materials."

Wayward Sons will be open for dinner only; brunch will be added come spring. It will seat 200-plus including a bar and outdoor garden. Expect craft cocktails and a wine list focused on sustainability. Dodds' new baby opens Monday, December 7 at 4:30 p.m. and will be open daily. Behold the menu, below:

Chef-owner Eddy Thretipthuangsin will reopen in December with a different concept.

Fort Worth-born Kin Kin Urban Thai has already called it quits on Oak Lawn. The Thai restaurant opened in early July, meaning it survived less than six months.

But chef/owner Eddy Thretipthuangsin isn't giving up the space: Instead he's transforming it into a concept called BITE, which serves "globally influenced dishes with ... Asian flair." "We feel that BITE better serves our clientele locally," Chef Eddy says via press release. The Oak Lawn restaurant will reopen December 9 in its new form.

The first BITE opened early last year in Fort Worth's West 7th, but shuttered this summer — meaning Chef Eddy's concepts are playing a little game of restaurant musical chairs. As it stands now, Fort Worth still has a Kin Kin in West 7th; Oak Lawn will soon have a BITE; another Kin Kin location will open soon at Preston/Forest; and Richardson's CityLine development is getting both a Kin Kin and a BITE.
