Sometimes elegance is overrated, especially when it comes to desserts. While liquid nitrogen ice creams, compressed fruits, powders and foams are all fine and good, it's hard to beat a great ice cream sundae, root beer float, doughnut, or a piece of pie (or just about anything deep-fried). Now that swimsuit season is just about over, here are nine down-to-earth desserts to indulge in this fall.

What's better than a milkshake? Four milkshakes, obviously. Celebrate a strike with the milkshake sampler, which includes four minis: Oreo, coconut caramel, banana pudding, and S'mores.

Carnival Barker's

When's the last time you had a root beer float? No Barq's here, either — Carnival Barker's does it right with fancy St. Arnold's or Virgil's root beer and a big ol' scoop of their vanilla ice cream. (They're still trying to ramp up production to keep up with demand in the new spot, so go early in the day to snag one.)

Sure, the Pop Tart sundae with Fruity Pebbles at Dallas Beer Kitchen is something you could probably make at home, but then you wouldn't have their fantastic beer selection at your disposal (and trust us, this tastes better after throwing back a few). [Photo: Allison/Foursquare]

Emporium Pies

How's this for coffee and donuts? At Jeana Johnson and Colleen O'Hare's tiny Lakewood restaurant, freshly fried, spiced donut holes are threaded onto a skewer and served with a side of Vietnamese coffee and condensed milk ice cream. [Photo: Mot Hai Ba]

Pacific Table

Pacific Table does the classic ice cream sundae justice with Henry's Ultimate Sundae. Teresa Gubbins recently raved about the dessert's "fudgy topping made from melted Callebaut chocolate" and chopped Marcona almonds for that ideal sweet-salty combination. (There's also a Thai ice cream sundae for the more adventurous palate.)

Sprinkles Ice Cream

Sprinkles Cupcakes' new ice cream offshoot might be the tastiest place in town to get a cavity. The "Sprinkles Sandwich" plops a scoop of housemade ice cream inbetween two unfrosted cupcake tops, tasting like a distant memory of childhood birthday parties (if said parties had included Cap'n Crunch-flavored ice cream). Andre Natera is serving his take on the hysteria-inducing cronut at the new Village Kitchen. He calls them "donut croissants," and they're served with a side of Mexican hot chocolate for dipping. Consider throwing dietary concerns to the wind and pairing it with a Fruity Pebbles milkshake. [Photo: Village Kitchen via Eats Blog]

Zoli's NY Pizza Tavern

Do the diavoletti at Zoli's contain unicorn tears? Maybe, maybe not; but what we can confirm is that they are fried strips of dough drizzled with Nutella, sea salt caramel, and powdered sugar, and your table may very well come to blows over who gets the last one. [Photo: Zoli's]
