Fear was struck in the hearts of cheese fry-lovers all over the city when word surfaced yesterday that Dallas institution Snuffer'shas filed for bankruptcy. The family-owned chain is seeking a buyer and although it's business as usual at the restaurants for now, it's never a bad idea to have a back-up plan. With that in mind, here's a dozen suggestions for other places around town to get a cheese fries fix.
An excellent place for drunk food, Angry Dog serves a straight-up version of cheese fries with melted cheddar that you can doctor up however you like: bacon, grilled jalapenos, and sour cream, perhaps?
Vegan chili cheese fries? Yes, that's a thing, and they can be found at this Deep Ellum bar. Plus, the fries are baked, so they're considerably healthier than the traditional deep-fried version.
Cafe Brazil dusts their fries with some sort of starch before frying, so they stay crispy even when blanketed under a thick layer of cheese, bacon, scallions, and jalapenos; toppings are evenly distributed so you're not left with a sad bunch of naked fries at the bottom.
Company Cafe's cheese fries utilize sweet potatoes, which gives a little added dimension to the melty cheese, loads of bacon bits, and fresh sliced jalapenos. Despite Company Cafe's gluten-free and grass-fed leanings, this definitely is not health food.
The Elbow Room has just been resurrected after being closed for several months, so get over there for some late-night shuffleboard and top-notch cheese fries, if you can make it past the pizza.
Goodfriend switches it up a little with waffle-cut fries; they come topped with cheese, scallions, bacon, and jalapenos, but we suggest you gild the lily by adding blue cheese and pulled pork. Add a beer and you've got a damn fine, if perhaps heart attack-inducing, meal.
Hopdoddy's cheese fries are not exactly what you'd expect: Fresh Kennebec fries are served with a cup of decadent green chile queso for dipping, so they never got soggy.
The white-truffle parmesan fries here aren't exactly cheese fries, per se, but they are fries with cheese on them, so let's not fight over semantics, k? (There's also a chili-cheese version with jalapenos, for the purists.)
Delightfully divey Lakewood Landing's cheese fries are natural cut and topped with cheddar-jack, jalapenos, bacon, and green onions (and a side of ranch, because duh). Secret ingredient? Bacon fat drizzled on top.
Maple & Motor's homemade chili is pretty luscious stuff, so it's no surprise it makes for some killer chili-cheese fries on top of the perfectly salt-and-peppered potatoes. (The bacon and cheese version is pretty damn good, too.)
Nick Badovinus' lunch spot serves what are arguably the city's best French fries --crisp, dark golden brown and always perfectly seasoned-- and they'll make a nacho-cheese slathered version if you ask nicely. Don't forget the side of amazing housemade ranch.
