Now that it's officially hot as hell outside, most people probably don't want to gorge themselves on a huge burger or plate of pasta. Instead, consider choosing one of these 12 light(er) chicken-and-veggie options for a satisfying, protein-packed meal without the sluggish aftermath that heavy, rib-sticking dishes can bring on. (And this is Texas after all, so don't worry — a couple of them have ranch dressing.)

Bistro 31

Ladies who lunch flock to this Highland Park Village location, where the lunch menu features plenty of fresh salads. You can add grilled chicken to any of the salad options, but our favorite is the spinach & goat cheese salad. Bistro 31’s twist on this classic combination adds shaved fennel, dried cherries, and almonds for a healthy lunch with perfectly balanced flavors.

Blind Butcher

If you can tear yourself away from the poutine, you'll find this house-o-meat actually has surprisingly good salads. The hearty "Elbow Salad" is a twist on the Cobb with Spiceman's greens, double-smoked chicken, pickled vegetables, chopped hard-boiled egg, white cheddar and pickle ranch dressing. That's right, PICKLE RANCH.
The ham, cheese, and egg on a Cobb salad might make it less healthy than some of its leafier counterparts, but that doesn’t mean that it won’t be delicious. At Bolsa, the chicken salad isn’t just an afterthought, it’s a damn good meal. The classic bacon and egg are there, but a blue cheese and avocado dressing make it different than those boring old Cobbs in your work cafeteria.

Chino Chinatown

A blend of Latin and Asian cuisines has the making for great salads, and Chino Chinatown’s grilled salad is formidable. Get your daily requirement of both vegetables and fruit at lunch with Chino’s grilled salad, which comes with fresh jicama, pineapple, shaved cucumber, and teriyaki chicken dressed in a yuzu vinaigrette.

Crisp Salad Company

You can create just about any combo of greens, protein, veggies and dressing imaginable at this popular new salad spot on Lower Greenville, but the pre-designed menu options are pretty legit, too: A fresh spin on the classic Waldorf salad is comprised of romaine with grilled chicken, grapes, tea-infused raising, marinated apples and walnuts tossed in a flavorful curry dressing.
It’s called a vermicelli bowl, but come on, this dish is basically a salad. Vermicelli noodles are topped with a variety of vegetables, including lettuce and carrots, peanuts, and seared chicken breast. If you’re really dedicated to having a healthy lunch, you can order the vermicelli bowl from the paleo menu, where the noodles are excluded.

La Duni

For a salad that’s a little bit different, head to La Duni. The tomate con pollo et palmitos is made with fresh tomatoes, hearts of palm, and grilled chicken. Queso fresco and balsamic vinaigrette make an interesting and fresh dressing, and you’ll have plenty of room for one of those delicious pastries after.

Nazca Kitchen

What could be more virtuous than a chicken salad with kale? The health-conscious menu at Nazca has one with baby kale, romaine, roasted chicken, roasted red peppers, carrots, feta, pepitas, avocado, jack cheese, and a smoky cumin-mustard seed dressing. It's a veritable vegetable garden in a bowl.

Most people come for the burgers and giant Big Gulps of Kool-Aid, but OSK certainly has healthier options if you're in the market. The "Red Brick" chicken salad includes juicy grilled chicken, a pile of mixed greens, shredded cheese, pico and the mindblowingly delicious house ranch dressing. (If that's too healthy, you can always grab a Twix out of the refrigerator case afterward.)
At most restaurants, your options can be kind of limited when you’re craving a good chicken salad. At Salata, you can build a salad that suits your taste, meaning that you won’t have to worry about picking out any errant mushrooms or chickpeas. First, you’ll have to choose between Asian BBQ, pesto, or spicy chipotle seasoning for your chicken, and all the options are equally good. Then come the hard decisions – trying to pare down the smorgasbord of choices into a salad that actually makes sense.

Snappy Salads

Of course a restaurant dedicated to salads is going to have a great chicken salad. The BBQ ranch chicken salad has plenty of fried chicken tenders, black beans, and corn, plus totally addictive BBQ ranch dressing. (Okay, not all chicken salads are healthy.) For a lighter option, try the Thai green curry chicken salad with red bell pepper and carrot. [Photo: Mary B./Foursquare]

Ziziki's

Greek salad is pretty common on menus across the city, but few are as good as Ziziki’s. Start with a little hummus and dolmades, but save room for Ziziki’s classic greek salad with herb-rubbed chicken skewers. Generous helpings of good feta cheese and kalamata olives are almost a meal on their own, but the chicken adds both great flavor and a little extra staying power.
